We all know the presidential election is total bullshit. So, why do we keep giving it so much attention?

Possible reasons why:

  • We enjoy ridiculous, bullshit circus shows that make fun of people (donkeys and elephants are cool too).  I mean the presidential race is hilarious.  Simple comedy, buzz words, dirty jokes, funny photos…  Photos of candidates eating corn dogs?  SO HILARIOUS!  We’ve really proven ourselves to be proles in the stinkard pit.
  • It’s easy to care about something that doesn’t matter; it’s a distraction from more important issues.  God forbid we try to follow what’s going on with the U.S. sanctions on Iran, the current state of the European Union, the massacre is Syria… should I go on?
  • It’s an issue for lazy people, in other words: voting tends to be for lazy, ignorant people.
  • Or maybe we all don’t know that it is bullshit despite the obvious bullshit and most of us somehow remain unbelievably ignorant.

It’s ridiculous when I see the most intelligent of people focusing on the upcoming elections.  It’s like nobody has ever read anything about propaganda, media tactics, writings by Noam Chomsky, or 1984.  If we know anything from history, it’s that systems use the media and public relations to keep citizens docile, misinformed, focused on less important issues, and well, stupid.

If we just divert our attention away from the election, essentially ignore it and make it irrelevant, then it will be irrelevant!  We have the power to make changes in this country; the changes that we want.  Yes: you, me and everyone you know has the power to do something about the discontent in this world that does not have to do with these elections.  By focusing on bullshit elections, we are holding ourselves back.  We do not need to participate in the upcoming elections to change this country.

As Howard Zinn said, “Voting is easy and marginally useful, but it is a poor substitute for democracy, which requires direct action by concerned citizens.”
